- Directly aid the children in need:
For you $2 is probably the price of a cup of coffee, but for a child in rural China it can mean a window to the world:
$2 = 1 book.
For you $20 is probably the price of a book, but for a child in rural China it means a semester's education:
$20 = 1 semester at school.
Note: Although tuition is not charged for primary education in China, fees keep many children in low-income families away from school.
-Help improve the learning environment for rural children:
-
Improving the learning environment for the children is not just about material donations. Dream Corps sends volunteer teams to help the local organizations establish management plans and train local leadership in the skills necessary to guarantee sustained operation of the donated facilities.
-
Children are not automatically turned on to the pursuit of knowledge simply by the presence of books. Dream Corps volunteers take the next step and provide learning programs to nurture children's love for reading.
-
Dream Corps does not build the library or conduct programs in isolation from the local life. Volunteers make efforts to make the libraries public space and involving as many as local efforts as possible, impacting the way of life for local children and farmers.
- Educate the previleged youths:
Volunteering experience with Dream Corps encourages participants to reflect on their moral growth and personal development, and help them to develop the perspectives on the less previleged group in the society.
How will my donations be spent?
All our summer volunteers pay for their own flights to China. All our staff do not receive any monetary compensation for their voluntary work. Your donation will be used in one of two areas:
All private donations, except for grants to Dream Corps or fellowship to a Dream Corps member, are solely spent on purchase of books, computers and other educational materials for local schools and community libraries, and be directly delivered to the local schools and villages by our volunteers.
Certain subsidies to participating volunteers for their local expenses in China, such as lodging and transportation to and from the hosting sites. ( As more and more volunteers bring with themselves individual grants from the outside, demands for this expense will decrease.)
We are seeking foundation grants and business sponsorship to cover administrative costs and expenses for relevent events, such as volunteer training and Dream Corps Annual Forum in China on volunteerism.
