Since the very beginning, Dream Corps has recognized that good volunteer work must be reciprocal and that volunteering in education must also be the education of volunteers.
During volunteer training, we highlight the importance of learning from the communities we are trying to help. We make it absolutely clear that our projects must be built on a deep understanding of the local conditions.
During their stay on sites, volunteers are asked to continuously reflect on and adjust their own thinking. Through home visits, observations and discussions, and more importantly through living in the local communities and working with the local people, volunteers learn to understand the local conditions and adapt their way of working accordingly.
The efforts of Dream Corps towards understanding the communities we try to help is not restricted to our Summer Volunteer Program. We bring together professionals within and without Dream Corps to conduct site-specific research and facilitate oversea and local students and researchers with a platform for field research. We hope to join expert opinions with local voices in promoting multilateral cooperation, raising awareness, and gathering support for the development of education in underprivileged communities.
